Kampr: 2015 Keystone Hideout 29BKS
Our first bunkhouse to date and our second Scandinavian inspired style! Our clients wanted a mix of Boho, Scandi, and Farmhouse aesthetics all intersecting around a love and appreciation for Nature. We had them send us inspiration photos and discussed what specific features they wanted in their RV.
They wanted it had to have two bedrooms including a bunk room for their 3 kids, be under 7000 lbs, slide out preferred, and have the ability to incorporate a fireplace/mantel wall. We knew they planned to park it on their land as a “cabin” retreat, but also wanted the ability to travel with it if they choose to. With this information we went shopping and found them the perfect RV and started designing!
Our clients had a big role in choosing the design elements including colors, features, and wallpaper designs. They wanted us to use Rubio Monocoat for their counters and wood features throughout and so we took some time to learn about this new product and fell in love! Durable, completely natural and VOC free we were on board 100%! RV’s are small spaces and it makes sense to use non-toxic materials whenever possible, reducing exposure to VOCs. Plus, this stain is so durable and smells beautiful!!
Design resources:
Cabinet Paint: Nature’s Gift by Behr
Stain: Bourbon by Rubio Monocoat USA
Wallpaper: Bennett Charcoal Dotted Scallop
All of the appliances were in excellent condition so we worked them into the overall design which also worked wonderfully with our clients budget. When working with clients we set a budget up front which helps guide us in the RV shopping phase and in the design phase as well! We did update the kitchen sink and faucet as well as put in new pine wood counters with a bead board backsplash painted in a bright cabinet white.
Kitchen resources:
Kitchen sink: Stainless drop-in, double bowl
Kitchen faucet: We love this one!
We often build out fireplace mantel walls in our renovations. They completely transform the look and feel of an RV and make them feel so much cozier! We have only used an electric fireplace insert which give off plenty of heat saving on propane. They come in a variety of sizes and styles. The one we use even has flame color settings!
To build this wall we closed off one of the entrances to the main bedroom and flipped the bed making room for a walkway. We used a faux brick panel and built in matching bookshelves with a cabinet space to store the radio and other electronics. We also ordered a canvas print from Easy Canvas Prints to cover the TV when not in use. When the TV is in use, the canvas fits perfectly in the bedroom on the shiplap wall next to the custom designed sliding door!
Kampr’s main bedroom is one of the coziest bedrooms we’ve put together! The morning light filters just right through the custom curtains and there is texture everywhere! We installed a white shiplap wall as well as this slat wall feature finished in the Bourbon Rubio Monocoat USA. When flipping the bed orientation, we took out one closet, shortened the other to fit a residential 80”x60” mattress and added accessible storage underneath the bed. Keeping the upper cabinets no storage was lost and a loungy bedroom was created!
Lighting can be one of the most impactful changes you can make in your RV besides fresh paint. We always update to LED RV lights where we are not putting in new residential feature lighting. LED RV lights are energy efficient and they do not heat up. We’ve had some that are HOT to the touch. No good. When in stalling residential lights that plug-in, be sure to also use 12V lightbulbs!

This bunk room was an amazing project for us! We ended up moving a wall and adding a pocket door. Our clients were concerned about the bunks becoming too short for their kids before they got a chance to really enjoy their RV. So we moved walls! And we took out the huge, clunky storage closet and opted for open storage under the lower bunk as well as bench storage. The slat wall and hooks were a total surprise for our clients adding in some functional design for their kiddos. We of course updated lighting with our favorite battery operated gallery lights! They come in a variety of colors and have a ton of great features including a timer.
In the bathroom we switched a few things up by painting the cabinet black and using Nature’s Gift by Behr on the batten board feature we installed. It is always nice to have open storage in small spaces like a RV bathroom. There is not a lot of room to have cabinet doors opening and closing and it can make a space feel small very quickly! We like to use basketry to organize open storage and found this super cute basket at Hobby Lobby. If you are worried about transit and it falling out, we’ve seen a lot of people use velcro to secure items like this basket in place.
